Throwback: Seminary Family Feast 2006

Back in 2006, I was assigned as Regent in Christ the King Mission Seminary. It’s so amazing to look back at those wonderful year, especially during the month of September. You see, every SVD seminarian looks forward to September 8, the SVD Foundation anniversary. We call this Family Feast.

The Family Feast is a long-standing tradition in the SVD congregation as our way of celebrating our birthdays in common. In 2006, the theme of the Family Feast in Christ the King was “M:131.” That is, 131 years in the mission of spreading God’s word.

That was exactly ten years ago. How time flies! Several other Family Feast celebrations year after year were also equally memorable. I thank God for the gift of perseverance in my chosen congregation. More power to the SVD! I hope to witness a hundred years more of Family Feasts!

PHILIPPINE SVD @ 100

collage_svd_centennial

The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) is now celebrating our one hundred years of missionary presence in the Philippines. On August 15, 1909, the first two SVD missionaries arrived in Manila and began their long journey to Abra, a landlocked province in Northern part of Luzon. With only a bamboo raft, Fr. Juan Scheiermann, SVD and Fr. Ludwig Beckert, SVD journeyed on Abra River to Bangued, the capital. They reached Pilar, Cagotungan, Abra — their mission station, by horse — in their full black cassocks! Perhaps they never thought that one hundred years after, the SVD mission in the Philippines will be this big and this successful. We owe all to the grace of God.

It seems young priests are more comfortable in front of the camera

Last August 17, I arrived in Cebu for the Centennial Celebration of the SVD Philippine Southern Province. More than 100 of my confreres came to celebrate this significant occassion.

GEDC5288

Hehe Parang Mag-Ama! Puros Hubag!

With the theme “We Remember, We Rejoice, We Renew”, we were delighted to hear anecdotes about the SVD in the Philippines. Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD shared to us never-been-heard-nor-published stories about the Divine Word Missionaries in the Philippines (Sample: Did you know that the SVD owned all the Church properties in one of the Archdioceses in the country after the World War II? Mahabang istorya ito!) I was really thankful to the good bishop who happened to be the ordaining prelate during my priestly ordination. So, i also took the opportunity to have photo op with him.

GEDC5290

Fr. Tony Pernia, SVD shared about the facts and figures in the Philippine SVD. FYI, Fr. Tony is the Superior General of the SVD worldwide!!! Not only that, he is a Filipino!!! During our time with him, somebody made a remark, “100 years of the SVD in the Philippines is not enough to produce a saint, but enough to produce a Superior General.”

GEDC5255

The SVD together with the Blue Sisters and the Pink Sisters

GEDC5264The Pink Sisters are praying for me! Ssshhh, wag maingay!

Our sister congregations also celebrated with us. The Centennial Mass was celebrated at the Pink Sisters Convent together with our lay mission partners, XVDs and the Blue and Pink Sisters. The presider and the mass homilist was Fr. Tony. Agape meal followed.

We also had basketball exhibition game: SVD vs. XVD (ex-SVD seminarians). Did I mention the SVD won? We were on the Sports page of the Sunstar Magazine the following day, and the whole of Cebu knew about it.

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal also joined us for the prayer before the clergy religious night. He also expressed his appreciations for the missionary work done by the SVDs in the Archdiocese of Cebu.

GEDC5344The SVDs listened to a fisherman from Cordova

The last day of the Centennial Celebration proved to be the most memorable and most meaningful for me. Perhaps all my other confreres will also agree. We went to Cordova, where one of the housing projects of the SVD is located. Father Max Abalos, SVD, who spearheaded the project said that it is geared toward the development and liberation of the people from poverty and oppression. The Cordova fisherfolk village has now a cooperative business and will soon establish their dried danggit business.

GEDC5338

Mabenta ang mais ng mga fisher folks. Mga pari nag-enjoy!

Our last stop was the Janssenville in Bangkal, Soong, Lapu-Lapu City. Janssenville is another housing project of the SVD. It is a compound of 100 houses with a gate and a chapel for the housing recipients. Together with NGOs, our mission partners, fisherfolks, street children, XVDs, students, visitors, Janssenville settlers and many others, we were given a tour in the area. Fr. Anthony Salas, SVD, JPIC-IDC director, said the houses were built through the consolidated effort of the SVD and the University of San Carlos (USC) community and the beneficiaries.

The Holy Mass in the afternoon was presided by Bishop Bastes. He also gave the homily in flawless Visayan language. Hehe Bol-anon man pod diay siya mao nga hasler kaayo mobisaya. Paka-paka oy!

GEDC5366Bishop Bastes, SVD

After that, Fr. Tony led the blessing of the whole village. We blest the 100 houses, one priest per house. (siyempre sama ako doon). It was very touching…ang bawat pamilya may isa-isang paring dala papunta sa kanilang mga bahay. Masaya ang naging kwentuhan ko with the family na nakasama ko.

Fellowship meal followed. It was like a feast. I was happy and thankful to be part of that celebration. Indeed, it was a piece of heaven. More pictures HERE!!!

Congrats SVD and may the Triune God live in the hearts of all.

Procession During the Fiesta

He united the LGU and the Parish.

(note: I first met him when I was assigned in Surigao.

And what better way to celebrate unity kundi sa isang banquet!

Please welcome, ang aming KAINAN NG BAYAN!

SIGLO, SIGLA, SAKSI

No, the title is not the theme of this year’s Family Feast in Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay. It is the team to where I belong, the SSS. Siglo stands for 100 years, Sigla for Enthusiasm, and Saksi for Witness – that is, 100 years of SVD’s Enthusiastic Witnessing in the Philippine shores.

And our community in Tagaytay celebrates that in this year’s Family Feast.

Family Feast can be traced back to our founder, St. Arnold Janssen. Whenever someone is having his birthday, he would invite him for a one-on-one talk, sometimes over a bottle of beer to celebrate. Later on, when the members grew, they chose a certain day of the year to have a common birthday celebration. Thus, SVDs not only celebrate our foundation day on September 8 but also the birthdays of all confreres.

In the Philippines, Family Feast is one of the highlights of the seminary community for the school year. Usually, the community is divided into four or three competing groups. Some of the contests include cheerdance or cheering competition, ball games, parlor games, cultural presentations, indoor and outdoor games.

This year’s theme is Sentenaryo ng Misyonerong SVD sa Perlas ng Silangan. Frt. John Paul Marquez, SVD gives the theme a very beautiful rationale. Part of it says,

Sa taong ito, ang tema ng ating pagdiriwang
Ay nakatuon sa kasalukuyang larawan
Ng SVD sa buong Pilipinas,
Isang larawang binubuo ng
Panalangin, pagpapagal, sakripisyo,
Tuwa, pananampalataya at pagmimisyon
Ng mga naunang SVD
Mag-iisang taon na ang nakalipas.
Ito ang SVD ngayon!
Kung anuman TAYO ngayon ay
Dahil may mga SVD na
Nangarap, umawit, nanindigan, nanalangin.
Isa itong malaking pagdiriwang sa buong Simbahan,
Isang biyayang buong pusong
Ipagpapasalamat sa ating
Poong Maykapal.

This year’s coordinators settled for street dancing competition. The four teams had to present their street dancing in three different stations, with the third station being the grand showdown at the seminary gymnasium. It was very colorful! I decided to join my group because I was inspired with their energy and their dedication. I was at first only trying to play it safe and informed them I am going to the parish but I also underwent change of heart and made up my mind that I should not miss their company. My group mates were great! As usual, I had a very special participation: Nakasakay ako sa kawayan (I was carried on a bamboo raft). Hehehe. We won.

We also had action song competition. It was actually suggested by our vocation promoter Fr. Redz Domino, SVD for vocation campaign as well as animation song for the Philippine SVD Centennial. Ah, it was performance level for our team! Grabe! They were all very enthusiastic. We won.

This year, we did not go for beach outing on September 8 and I believed it was a good idea. We were all together in the seminary gym celebrating our foundation day with bingo, videoke, parlor games and championship in ballgames. Remember, last year when we went to the beach and naiwan si Ate Susan pag-uwi namin? At least this year, all were in. Walang naiwan. Lahat sabay sa saya. Indeed, Siglo, Sigla, Saksi!

All in all, our team won first runner-up. I would like to thank my groupmates! You were the best team I ever had in my eleven years of Family Feast. Thank you to the coordinators, you did very well. Solid collegian talaga kayo! I am proud of you: Sherwin, Ronrey, JP, Elliot, Reniel, Sedfrey, Sergz, Gilbert, Ritchelle, and Siega.

Next year, I will be celebrating my Family Feast in a totally different community. But you guys have touched me in a very special way and I would to assure you that we will always be one in prayers. Mabuhay tayong lahat! Mabuhay ang SVD!

May the heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all.

SIMPLE MOMENTS

There are many events in the seminary that I really cherished. Counting them makes me thank God for blessing me with wonderful people in my seminary formation. Behind these pictures are simple stories that create life time impact…
At the beginning of the school year, the Prefects’ Team scheduled a Purpose-Driven Life Retreat for our dear seminarians. The response on the part of our formands was very good. They were very participative during prayers and very interactive during activities. The speakers were associated with the competent Catholic group that gives PDL retreat. It was not only the seminarians who learned from the retreat, I also gained insights which really deepened my faith convictions.
Ah, this is the start of the Family Feast! I was roaming around to check the Trinitarium Class in their preparations. They were enjoying the job!

A toast to the success of the Family Feast. This is taken during the Victory Party. After all the sleepless nights and preparations-that-seemed-like-eternity, we congratulated ourselves and partied all night. Thank you Trinitarium Class!

Just mention Manny Pacquaio and every seminarian has something memorable to share. Every corner of our seminary has been a witness of how seminarians united ourselves when Pacquaio is in the ring. The fights of Pacman have always been a source of pride and unity among us.

This picture is taken for cyber-promotion of the vocation office. I called on some seminarians to have photo sessions with me to be posted at the website that I was planning to make for the SVD. I asked them to wear sotanas and pose before the camera. This one came out so naturally.

This one is taken in Surigao during our Regency processing. For the first time after so many months, we regents were gathered to share our sacred stories of “formation in mission for the mission.” Of course, the outing was great too!

This one was unexpected! Rev. Elmer Ibarra, SVD asked me to accompany him for his guesting stint at the program of Fr. Bel San Luis, SVD. When we were already at DZMM, I was also asked to join him!

This one is meaningful and funny. I joined the fourth year class in their evening prayers. It turned out that a generous person gave them a cake courtesy of Red Ribbon. Before we ate the cake, we spent some time for photo sessions. It was a moment of delaying gratification. “Hating-kapatid” was their practice. Ah, that was great!

This is during our Christmas party — an occassion to remember and to always cherish! I made a youtube presentation for this!

TOP FAMILY FEAST PICTURES

Every September 8, the Society of the Divine Word celebrates the Family Feast, our annual foundation anniversary. We call to mind our humble beginnings as a congregation many years ago (1875).

The Family Feast 2006 in Christ the King was spearheaded by the Trinitarium Class.

These pictures are simply unforgettable!

Indeed, pictures paint a thousand words.
The blow that made all spectators laugh!
We never have this parlor game during our time!
This looks like World Cup!
Certainly, one of the greatest pix!
Family Feast strenghtens our family ties.
No, they are not the Gee-girls!
The Coords waited for the announcement of winners.
