Archbishop Jose S. Palma officiated the canonical erection of the Immaculate Conception Parish of Colawin last June 23, 2016. This new parish is located in the mountain barangay of the municipality of Argao, around 80 kilometers away from the city of Cebu. Part of the decree of canonical erection reads, “we hereby elevate the quasi-parish of Immaculate Conception into a parish with all its rights and privileges.”
In a solemn Eucharistic celebration, the first parish priest Fr. Mario Villacastin was also installed. Under the direction of Canon Law Canon 519, “he (parish priest) exercises the pastoral care of the community entrusted to him under the authority of the diocesan Bishop, whose ministry of Christ he is called to share, so that for this community he may carry out the offices of teaching, sanctifying and ruling with the cooperation of other priests or deacons and with the assistance of lay members of Christ’s faithful, in accordance with the law.” The new parish has an ecclesial territory of seven barangays.
In his homily, Archbishop Jose Palma reminded the people of God that: “ang pagtukod sa bag-ong parokya ug ang pag-instolar sa bag-ong kura paroko – kining tanan nindot nga pasalig nato pagpakita sa dakong gugma sa Dios natong tanan nga iyang banay, nga iyang mga tawo.” (The erection of the new parish and the installation of the first parish priest – all these are wonderful assurance of God’s love to us, his people).
