Theological symposium precedes Eucharistic Congress

Serving as an underpinning for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress that will begin on January 24 in Cebu, a theological symposium started Wednesday, January 20, at the Cebu Doctors’ University auditorium.

Among the topics to be taken up are the Christian virtue of hope, an exegetical discussion of a passage from the gospel of St. John, liturgy and inculturation, the history of the “Novus Ordo”, the evangelization of the secular world, and a catechesis on the Sunday Eucharist.

The topics have been chosen for their relevance to the theme of the IEC which is three-fold: the centrality of the Eucharist in Christian life, the liturgical celebration and the social dimension of the Eucharist.

It is hoped that the symposium would give clear ideas to those who are not yet familiar with the theological understanding of the sacrament, or otherwise would offer a review if not deepen the knowledge of those who already have studied and are availing of it.

The symposium would also give a glimpse of the current issues, problems and challenges regarding this sacrament in the different places and cultures of the world.

Workshops will also be held to come up with pastoral plans, strategies and programs.

The speakers and workshop facilitators have been chosen from a pool of renowned theologians and educators. Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, who spoke about the virtue of hope on the first day, is an English Dominican who formerly served as Master of the Congregation.

Fr. Francis Moloney is an Australian Salesian priest who is author and editor of a good number of theological articles and journals. He spoke on a passage of the St. Johns gospel, “He loved them to the end,” that starts the narrative on the institution of the Eucharist.

Fr. Mark Francis will speak on the delicate topic of liturgy and inculturation. He is president of Catholic Theological University in Chicago.

Msgr. Piero Marini, who will speak on the history of the Novus Ordo, is the president of the Pontifical Committee for the IEC, and has served as the papal master of ceremonies for 20 years.

Fr. Thomas Rosica takes care of “Evangelizing the secular world.” He is a famed columnist who also heads a Catholic media network.

Dr. Josefina Manabat, the lone Filipino and woman speaker will handle the “catechesis on the Sunday Eucharist.” She is currently the dean of the graduate school of liturgy of San Beda College, Manila.
