Last September 9 2001, I received an email from Fr. Robert Ibay, SVD, a Filipino SVD missionary to Chile and he narrated to me his language disaster. His story goes this way: “One time it was Lenten season, I had a paraliturgy with the grade 8. The gospel during the time was “when the soldiers broke the bones of Jesus (“los soldados rompieron los huesos de Jesus). Bones in Castellano is “huesos”, and eggs is “huevos.” Instead of saying, romperon los “huesos”de Jesus, I mispronounced it. The soldiers broke the “eggs” of Jesus! Such mispronunciation made funny the solemn celebration.

English ‘eggs’ and ‘legs’ are pretty close too. And then there is the idiom, “walking on eggs,” which refers to having to be extremely careful in what one is doing so as to not cause damage to fragile things.
