That is what you call Filipino Power! Many Filipinos get excited over our kababayans who make it abroad. From world entertainment to fashion to sports to latest scientific discoveries, Filipinos are always excited about Pinoys and Pinays who “put the Philippines on the map.” Remember that Miss Universe edition with 3 Filipina candidates and 1 Filipina host? We ended up with Miss Photogenic.

Last week, I read about a Pinoy who auditioned at the American Idol. However, it did not excite me that much since the writer said that this Pinoy was not very lucky to be allowed to proceed to the next level of the competition.

While updating my youtube videos that night, that “Pinoy” (whose name escaped my memory) came to my mind. So, I lost no time, searched for American Idol and presto, there were so many uploaded videos featuring his audition. I learned that his name was Reynaldo Lapuz. When I started viewing it, I exclaimed, “Oh my God, he looks like Jacky Chan!” and he was able to wow the judges. He made Simon smile (Clap! Clap! Clap!)! His song composition “We’re Brothers Forever” gave the AI a party flavor, and Paula was having fun!

It’s amazing to know that this humble tricycle driver in Sikatuna Village in QC, Philippines would turn out to be global sensation with his 15 minutes of fame in American Idol. And he was a good sport when Simon said “I’m going to make a prediction here. I have a horrible feeling that it’s going to be a hit record. You’re very entertaining. I actually like you but it’s going to be ‘No.'””. Ang lakas ng powers ng taong ito! Watching his audition made me proud of being a Filipino. I do not know this man personally but I know of countless Filipinos who go out of our county in search of “greener pastures” and their resourcefulness and creativity really paid off. Renaldo Lapuz is one of them. And mind you, his song has a very powerful message:

“I am your brother
Your best friend forever
Singing the songs
The music that you like
We’re brothers ‘til the end of time
Together forever ‘til the end of time
I am your brother
Your best friend forever
Singing the songs
The music that you like
We’re brothers ‘til the end of time
Together or not, you’re always in my heart
Your hurting feelings
Will reign no more.”

Pinoys, let us hope that something bigger will be in store for our kababayan. God bless him.
