(This is my second article in the coffee table book of the SVD Central Province on the 100th year of the Divine Word Missionaries/SVD in the Philippines. Until now, nasa printing press pa rin po yata, hehe.)

Have you heard of Janssenville?

Janssenville is only one of the many subdivisions built by Fr. Leo Schmitt, SVD. From being Prefect of Seminarians in the archdiocesan seminary of Binmaley, Pangasinan and Christ the King Mission Seminary, Fr. Leo was appointed by Fr. Schűtte, SVD Superior General, to lead the movement called Action Leaven and serve as its Executive Director.  This Action Leaven was born out of the 1960’s turbulent First Quarter Storm where there were so much violations of human rights and social strife resulting from poverty, unemployment and homelessness. This scenario paved way for the birth of

Action Leaven whose aim was the safeguard the rights of the oppressed.

Si Padre Leo

The pioneer group of Leaveners was composed of 70 priests, nuns, seminarians, community organizers, engineers and agriculturist among others. It was adopted by CBCP as an experiment for the Archdiocese of Manila. They established 10 pilot parishes. However, in the process, they were confronted with some Leaveners who had the tendency to incorporate leftists’ principles into the movement’s Christian orientation and to some extent, it brought confusion among the members.L - DDD - 42

The year after, Fr. Leo’s contract with the Action Leaven ended and Rufino Cardinal Santos appointed Bishop Protacio Gungon as his successor.

However, Fr. Leo did not stop from what he started. Shortly after leaving the Action Leaven, some 800 families sought his help after being forced to leave from Pleasant Hills, Mandaluyong. So, he was thrown into the herculean task of looking for a relocation site  for the squatter community. Together with 2 SVD confreres, 2 sisters and 5 laymen, Fr. Leo created a foundation possessing a legal personality that would address the problem of informal settlers. On September 28, 1971, the SAMAHANG BAGONG BUHAY FOUNDATION INCORPORATION (SBBFI) was formally registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit corporation.

Motivated by the Bible passage from Matthew 25:40 which states that “what you have done to the least of my brethren, you have done unto me”, the primary objective of the SBBFI is “to help build socially, economically and culturally self-sustaining Christian communalities with the development of the whole person as the ultimate goal”. The foundation provides low-cost housing for the poor but the services it renders cover a wide range of areas including, but not limited to, medical help, pastoral services, production center and establishment of kindergarten schools.

IMG_1803Si Father Leo kinukulit si Fr. Bong na kumakain ng lugaw (?)

From the time of the foundation’s birth, many housing projects were already built: San Antonio Village in Antipolo; San Jose Freinademetz Subdivision in Cogeo, Antipolo; Janssenville Subdivision in Cainta, Rizal; San Agustin Village in Antipolo; San Lorenzo Ruiz in Bulacan and Antipolo; St. Francis Square, Payong, which is also in Antipolo.

It was in 1987 when Gerardo Ozaeta, through Jaime Cardinal Sin, asked the help of SBBFI regarding the squatter problem of one thousand families illegally occupying the 36 hectares of land known as Upper and Lower Manggahan, owned by the Melitona Estates. After continuous organizational work and communication, the homeowners association was formed. When the relocation site was secured the year after, the people made their transfer from Upper Manggahan to the Munting Paraiso, now known as Janssenville, after St. Arnold Janssen.

Originally, Janssenville was part of the St. Anthony of Padua Parish. When the canonization of the then Blessed Arnold became certain, Fr. Leo approached the bishop about the plan of making Janssenville the seat of a new parish to be named after the SVD founder. But, there were strong reservations on the part of the parish priest of St. Anthony. Providentially, through the inspection trip of the Vicar General, Msgr. Roberto de Guzman, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Msgr. Peter Canonero, Msgr. Mariano Balbago and two other priests, it was agreed that a new parish should be erected “to thank St. Arnold for the services of his congregations to the Church, in particular to the Diocese of Antipolo and to promote his virtues.” This vision was accepted by the presbyteral council, the priests and the Bishop. On 30th of November, 2003 the St. Arnold Janssen Parish was canonically erected. Holy Mass was presided by Bishop Gabriel Reyes, DD and concelebrated by Msgr. Roberto de Guzman and Msgr. Peter Canonero together with the SVD PHC Provincial Superior Fr. Joel Maribao, SVD. It was the first and only permanent religious parish in the Diocese of Antipolo. On January 15 the following year, Fr. Leo Schmitt was installed as the first parish priest.

Good+Friday+(1)Ako, si Fr. Leo, Si Fr. Bong, si Fr. Martin

These “little something done for the less fortunate”, as what Fr. Leo calls it, was not  achieved overnight. Some stubborn families did not want to be relocated actually. On 1991, one family even claimed that it was Fr. Leo who ordered the demolition of their shanty, and this appeared in People’s Tonight, a local paper. “Walang awang pari,” was the opening salvo of the newspaper report. Fr. Leo relates “Having worked for 20 years from Smokey Mountain to Jalajala, it pains me very much to be subjected to a malicious smear campaign.” However, those who believed in the purity of his cause, also mobilized themselves to defend the SVD priest who was linked to a controversial demolition case.

1_522523903lMula sa isang maliit na simbahan, ito na ang simbahan ng Janssenville ngayon — the St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish

Today, the St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish is now on its way to completion. From a small chapel, the big Shrine stands in the very entrance of Janssenville Subdivision as a testament of the growth of the community who participated and believed in each other in planning and development procedures. Fr. Leo asserts that, “You cannot go wrong if you work on the premise of a Christian value and the development of the total person.” Indeed, Janssenville and the other communities founded by Fr. Leo and the Samahang Bagong Buhay Foundation remains a strong source of hope and inspiration in their community building and the upliftment of every person’s dignity.

MY NEW YEAR MESSAGE January 3, 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

At the breaking forth of the New Year, I was at St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish in Cainta, Rizal. Fr. Manuel “Bong” Bongayan, SVD presided the Holy Mass with Fr. Leo Schmitt, Fr. Martin Mandin and me as concelebrants. The Shrine was filled with people. Even the slightest rainshower did not dampen the spirit of our many parishioners who had to stay outside since they could no longer be accommodated inside. Ang dami talagang tao!

After the Mass, the four of us priests had our media noche. Fr. Martz and Fr. Bong teased Fr. Leo that perhaps at this time, many people should know that St. Arnold Janssen Shrine is a Catholic parish. We do not have cross pa kasi at the top of our Church building. That is why, some outsiders have mistaken the Shrine for a Protestant Church or church of any other denominations. Hehe. That will be one of our projects for the New Year as we continue with the Shrine construction.

The year 2009 will make a big difference in my life. For one, I will be graduating soon (yahoo!!!). Second, I will be leaving Tagaytay (also soon). Third, I will go (at last!) to my mission area in the South and that exites me a lot. I guess I knew the area (thanks to the leakage!) but I could not reveal it yet. I still have to wait for the formal announcement.

Basta, Happy New Year na lang po sa ating lahat! God sustained us last year. So, God will also sustain us this year. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga nagdasal para sa akin, nagmessage at nagbigay ng comments (through text, friendster, facebook, multiply, etc.) at sa lahat ng nagbigay sa akin ng mga regalo. Hehe.

May the Heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all. Amen.

God ordains, God sustains.

MY CHRISTMAS MESSAGE December 22, 2008

Greetings in the Divine Word!

For several days now, I have not accessed my friendster, multiply and facebook accounts since I am very busy attending to my first priorities in the ministry. I am now on my way to Tagaytay (I will have 8 pm mass) and I just dropped by an internet cafe here in Taft to extend my greetings of a Happy, Happy Christmas to all.

I am staying in St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish of Cainta, Rizal for this Christmas season. We are four SVD priests here (Fr. Manuel Bongayan, Fr. Martin Mandin and Fr. Leo Schmitt). Since we are a many, we are also invited by other parishes to say masses in nearby (and not-so-near parishes), kaya naman in just a span of one week, I have been to many parishes in Antipolo and even Pasig.

Hahaha, I have a very funny experience on my way to Sta. Lucia. I was in an FX and I had an old fat lady for a seatmate. Masikip ang front seat, di ba? This woman was praying fervently to while away the traffic. Beautiful sight. All of a sudden, I received a call and my cellphone (in its silent mode) vibrated to the highest level. Hehehe my cellphone was under my pocket and so I was at first trying to ignore it but I noticed the old lady also “vibrated.” Nakiliti sa vibration ng cp. Then she looked at me, laughed and said defensively, “akala ko kasi, hinipuan mo ako eh” (I won’t translate it in English ha).

So far, I don’t far liturgical bloopers.

In one parish, sabi noong isang parishioner, “Father, you are the handsome version of Manny Pacquaio.” Hahahaha. Smile na lang ako. Another one said happily, “You are the epitome of Manny Pacquaio.” Hahahahaha. Ano yon?

Last December 20, Saturday, I went to Lipa to visit sana Mt. Carmel but it was not materialized. I was catching up for my 6 pm Mass kasi in Tagaytay. At 8 pm, I also had my Mass at our Divine Word Seminary.

I wished to stay longer to chat with my brother scholastics and the Sunday Group but I was in a hurry to go back to Manila for my ABS-CBN Healing Eucharist stint with Fr. Aris Martin, SVD the following day. He was the presider. I was the homilist.

This coming December 27, I am going to Laoag to attend also his Thanksgiving Mass. December 29 will also be the Thanksgiving Mass of Fr. Gil Dulay, SVD in Sorsongon.

I thank God for my priestly vocation this Christmas. Please also storm heaven with your prayers for my perseverance.

By the way, I would like to also thank the cashier (kung sino man siya) of People’s Park in the Sky for his honesty. I was with the St. Arnold Janssen Knights of the Altar there last December 19. We were billed 225 pesos. I gave the cashier a thousand peso bill.

After thirty minutes tour, I realized di ko pala nakuha ang sukli ko! But thank God, the cashier immediately recognized me when we were about to go out and gave me my change even before I could ask for it. Maraming salamat po.

Friends, don’t ever forget to thank God for all the blessings we received (and we will still receive) this year. Thank God also for Christmas, that God come in our midst, “socialize” with us, and even lay down His life for us. Imagine, kung walang Pasko, wala ring Christmas bonus. Hehe.

To all of you, Merry, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. It is my fervent wish that all of us will be happy and holy in the next year ahead.

In the Divine Word,

Fr. Felmar Castrodes Fiel, SVD

WE REMEMBER, WE REJOICE, WE RENEW January 17, 2008

January 15, 2008.

Divine Word Shrine, Quezon City.

128 priests, 2 bishops and more than a hundred SVD seminarians – a sea of white vestments!

We Remember. We Rejoice. We Renew.

SVD friends and several other religious congregations came to celebrate with us in our launching of the Philippine SVD Centennial (1909-2009). Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD cheerfully welcomed the community: “99 years ago, we were not here. 99 years later, we will no longer be here. Today we are here. Let us capture the moment by greeting each other I am happy you are here.”

Indeed it was a happy moment everyone wanted to capture.

We Remember. The two SVD missionaries who set foot on Philippine soil on 1909 reached their mission area via bamboo raft and horse ride. Whoa! Msgr. Arturo Bastes, SVD, DD, who presided the Holy Mass, related in his homily that the SVD Philippine mission was almost discontinued. On 1914, the Superior General Fr. Nicholas Blum, SVD wanted to abandon the mission because the war posed great danger to the missionaries. But the pioneers insisted to continue the missionary endeavor in Abra. Later on, more and more missionaries came until more and more mission stations were created.

We Rejoice. We have many reasons to celebrate. From the two simple missionary, the Philippine SVD has grown tremendously to become the biggest male religious congregation in the Philippine Church today. It has also produced 12 bishops already, one of which is a candidate for beatification. Our SVD Superior is now a Filipino in the person of Fr. Tony Pernia, SVD. It has also grown in its missionary involvement. Practically, we have covered the whole Philippine archipelago from A (Abra, which is up North) to Z (Zamboanga, which is down South).

We Renew. During the Holy Mass, the perpetually and temporarily professed SVDs prayed the Centennial Prayer composed by Fr. Felix Ferrer, SVD. That was a very solemn moment!

Bishop Bastes strongly encouraged us to “look back at the roots and the spiritual heritage of our founder. This spiritual heritage is laid on the foundation of the Trinity.” He added that “we should radically aim to enable all to achieve the fullness of human dignity by committing to defend it since human dignity in its fullness is participation in the life of the Trinity.”

Indeed, we have already widened our mission horizons. We are 100 years old in the Philippines and we know very well that the bulk of missionary work waiting for us can never be done without the prayers and support of the many people. It always inspires me to see many people helping us in our missions. The book given to me by my spiritual director in college (Fr. Stan Plutz, SVD) “Remembering SVD Missionaries” made me really very appreciative also of the efforts done of our confreres of the yesteryears. Lastly, thanks be to God who have made all these things possible for us. God indeed is never outdone in his generosity.

We Remember. We Rejoice. We Renew.

CENTENNIAL PRAYER OF THE PHILIPPINE SVD January 17, 2008

(This is composed by Fr. Felix Ferrer, SVD)

O Triune God, source of all blessings, you have always journeyed with us.

As we celebrate our 100 years of religious-missionary presence in the Philippines, we thankfully remember our first SVD missionaries with their pioneering spirit and commitment; the people who welcomed us and gave us the opportunity to serve; the communities emerged through the prayers and work of our brothers, the active and contemplative sisters, priests and lay partners.

We humbly rejoice at the dedication of our confreres, superiors, formators, educators and pastors; at the generous support of our lay mission partners; at the genuine response of the people we work with; at the dimension ministries that developed in the course of time, namely, mission animation, media communication, bible apostolate, justice, peace and integrity of creation.

And we faithfully renew our community spirit; our creative hearts in our various works; our common vision to help and strengthen the local church and involve ourselves in the social concerns of our people; and our mission to be witnesses to the Word in the world, especially in our country.

Inspired by our founder St. Arnold, St. Joseph, Blessed Helena, the Blessed Martyrs Stan, Gregory, Aloysius and Louis, and through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the other Patrons of the Society we pray to you Father, Son and the Holy Spirit who lives forever and ever. Amen.
