Five of our 7 New Deacons
The Maramisa Class of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) had their Diaconate Ordination last June 27, 2009 at San Isidro, Abra.

Very colorful Church
Bakit hindi sa Tagaytay? Kasi 100 years na kaming mga SVD sa Pinas this year and ang Abra ang cradle of the SVD mission. So, to make connections between the past and the present, sa Abra ang venue ng Centennial Diaconate Ordination.

The tomb of Fr. Juan Scheiermann, SVD –
the pioneer SVD missionary to the Philippines.

So, we have 7 new SVD deacons: Rev. Severo Biton, Rev. Cris Salar, Rev. Abraham Ronald Borja, Rev. Dante Barril, Rev. Ferdie Bajao, Rev. Mike Namba and Rev. Benjo Awitin. (Note: the deacon beside the bishop at the right is not an SVD).
Congratulations mga confreres! Sana makabingwit kami ng isa diyan para dito sa Olutanga Island, Zambonga Sibugay. Hehe.
Maraming salamat kay Fr. Gil Rochar Dulay, SVD for providing the pictures! Mabuhay ka Kuya Mountain!

Several SVD confreres, especially overseas, wanted to see the Dinner for a Cause held at the Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay last February 13. It was initiated for the renovation of the seminary roof, especially the Holy Spirit chapel. Nag-le-leak na kasi kapag umuulan (doon pa banda sa Blessed Sacrament). So, ayan na, ito na po.

This is during our practices. Complete attendance.

That is Frt. Benedicto Awitin, SVD with our Prefect Fr. Meng Menguito, SVD. Very serious during practice, huh.

The seminary quadrangle was the venue of the Dinner for a Cause.

Actually, before the dinner, there was a Lucernarium or Evening Prayer which was greatly appreciated by the visitors. Then, the dinner followed.

That’s the community, full-force!

We also serenaded the visitors per table, actually…

Living under the same roof for several years, I have been a witness of the ups and downs of my brothers in the formation. We share each other’s burdens and celebrate our little joys together.
For this school year, I have seen how my confreres broke their heads together. It was a rocky road for some since the academic demands were a little difficult for them.
I remembered my Christ the King days…remember that comprehensive exams where I bought several bottles of Red Bull to prevent myself from sleeping? Somebody did the same, only to collapse before answering the first written exam! Tsk! Tsk! Di kasi nag-Red Bull.
What joy to see my brothers finished the academic race! All of them received their well-deserved medals! I am very proud to have confreres like them! Congratulations to the Dakit Class and the Xin Ya Class.

Yes, the SVD missionaries of the Philippine Central Province have spoken. On January 16-18, 142 priests and brothers gathered together at the Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay for the Philippine Central Province General Assembly and chapter.

SVD gatherings like this have always been very colorful and inspiring for us seminarians. It is a great joy for us to be reunited with our former formators and brush elbows with our confreres. It is also an occasion to know each other’s apostolate, the lights and shadows of the ministry and not to mention, to celebrate missionary life. Yes, missionaries also drink and sing our hearts out.

But the highlight of the gathering which we seminarians really waited is the election of the Provincial and his Council. It was held in the afternoon of the second day. They started with the singing of Come, Holy Spirit before casting their votes.

The SVD missionaries of the Philippine Central Province have finally spoken. Fr. Nielo Cantilado, SVD was elected Provincial. It was a sweeping victory which delighted all the confreres around. He got ¾ of the total votes of the assembly. Confreres were clapping their hands in approval. Then, Fr. Nielo came to the front and addressed his confreres: “Last time, I refused. But now, you have spoken. I accept the position.” Loud cheers were heard.
It can be remembered that Fr. Nielo was also a candidate for Provincial three years ago but he declined before the actual voting process. Fr. Pol Jaucian, SVD won the position and Fr. Nielo was elected Vice Provincial. A sudden twist came when Fr. Pol became the Bishop of Abra. So, Fr. Nielo assumed the position vacated by Fr. Pol, and now he is elected and he accepted it humbly. His landslide victory is indeed a gesture of confidence coming from the SVDs in the Central Province.

Also elected were: Fr. Jerome Marquez, SVD (Vice-Provincial); Fr. Wilfredo Saniel, SVD (Admonitor); Fr. Pablito Tagura, SVD and Fr. Bar Fabella, SVD (councilors).

Congrats Fr. Nielo and your Council! God bless!

Yes! We have new 5 deacons in the SVD! Last Saturday, June 30, 2007, Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle of the Diocese of Imus ordained as deacons five of our fraters in the Holy Spirit Chapel of Divine Word Seminary. The new deacons are: (1) Rev. Arnold Biago, SVD; (2) Rev. Jhon Crisostomo, SVD; (3) Rev. Rico Glenn Deuna, SVD; (4) Rev. Ross Heruela, SVD; (5) Rev. Michael Tangente, SVD.

Bishop Tagle mentioned in his homily that the diaconate is a “humble and beautiful ministry.” He referred to the deacon as “servant of another servant” since he helps in the ministry of the bishop. He also highlighted that the diaconate is a “ministry at the threshold.”
The door of the Church is the entrance to the place of worship and the entrance to the world – the deacon stands there. He brings the works of creation to the altar of love and self-giving. In this way, the Church assumes the joys and pains of the world and gladly leads them to the reign of God.
Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle
